Chris Page - Wagon EP (Bullet:Dodge) OUT NOW

"The title track ‘Wagon’ opens with some lovely liquefied background percussion – which rises with no-little menace until the beats drop on the minute mark, punching through some haunting synth-work. From here it’s a brooding groove throughout, with little respite, even with the break. This is dark and claustrophobic stuff that even Tim Burton would wince at – nice.

The Hypertic remix of ‘Wagon’, for me, will work best on big systems in big rooms. Typical builds with plenty of room in the production for other elements to spice things up (loops perhaps?). With this, though, I can’t help but feel that (with some more dynamics and few more elements) – this remix would stand out much better. It’ll do nicely enough though, early in a set.

The highlight for me is ‘Hyde’ – a cracking bitch-snarl of a tune. Low slung

kicks and bass setting things off nicely – then my ears prick up when the hats drop by to say ‘hello’, with some clever granular and stutter FX adding interest. The track continues to add elements, with some great vox-work and glitched-samples keeping things building nicely to the break – from there it’s searing synth-stab time, and a guaranteed floor-melter on the home run. Great stuff – straight into the box for me.
Rounding off the EP is ‘Trash Cantina’ a huge and I mean HUGE soundscape of a track – pure techno draw out over eight minutes. Again Chris’ production is spot on with lovely bottom end wobble on the bass and firing hats balanced against the textures throughout. For me, this would easily get by played by the likes of Richie Hawtin or Dubfire as the track is built for ripping to shreds in a live situation. Too long for me to play on its own – but in the context of a live gig I can see how it would work."
