Kai-Zen - London based Techno and Deep House Club Night

The Kai-Zen Blog
August

Morning/afternoon/evening all.

I’ve had to work a little bit harder this month to find this selection of standout material. I’m unsure as to whether it’s because it’s been a slow month for music (I don’t believe this), or because i’ve been somewhat lazy and havn’t really been keeping up with current events (more likely). However, i’ve dragged my lethargic behind off the sofa for a proper sift through the audio archives, and i’m pleased to report i’ve come up trumps.

Akabu - 'Another World' (Andre Lodemann Remix)

Batting first is this new re-rub on the sublime Z-Records imprint. For those in the know, Z-Records has been around for longer than I care to remember, and they’ve always been the equivalent of the House music stamp of quality. Happily, they’ve recently taken a turn at releasing some absolutely superb new renditions of previous tracks. A notable effort from Motor City Drum Ensemble appeared not so long ago to the rapturous applause of Deep House fanatics the world over, and now it’s Lodemann’s turn to step up to the plate. His rework is a delightfully warm summertime groover that’ll seek out the elusive rays of sun at even the murkiest of outdoor events. The riff sounds distinctly like it’s been lifted from Diamonds Are Forever (correct me on this if i’m wrong), but I don’t see how that could ever be a bad thing.... A dash of Bond with your bassline, sir?

Dixie Yure - 'By Defection'
As much as i’d love to take credit for this, i’ll hold up my hands and say that it was my friend Angie who pointed this in my direction. Regardless, it’s an absolute belter, and totally appeals to my taste in all things Chicago House. From what I can gather, Dixie has only had a relatively recent spate of releases on the lesser-known Nordik Net record label. In a way, this illustrates one of the benefits of digital labels. There’s plenty of like-minded imprints out there that are quietly churning out incredible music, without having to worry about costly and time-consuming processes, such as pressing up vinyl’s and constructing elaborate packaging (factors that may have hindered or even prevented these labels from getting started in the first place). Looking back to ‘By Defection’, it’s a soul-lifting slice of horn-driven party starter. Indeed you’d do well to make note of this artist if you’re having one of those fruitless days that seems to turf up nothing but endless drippy Toolroom chart-fodder, or wearisome rehashes of 80’s Electro-pop anthems. It might just be enough to keep you from deleting your Beatport account.

Joel Mull & Dustin Zahn – 'Bossa Nossa' (Pan-Pot remix)

Aiming the sights at something with a bit more growl, I stumbled across Pan-Pot’s work on the Close Your Eyes remix pack, hailing from two of the more concrete pioneers of modern Techno. Mull & Zahn are household names amongst the Techno fraternity these days. Every DJ and their dog were playing Zahn’s ‘Stranger To Stability’ track last year (despite the fact that I still to this day fail to see what was so mesmerising about it), and this release on Enemy recordings will almost certainly filter its way down into the record bags of the masses. Pan-Pot throwing his name into the mixing bowl should ensure that this flies out the shop quicker than anything with a half-eaten apple logo attached to it. It’s a bit of an intimidating beast from the outset, with a rumbling bassline and filtered techy riff that breaks through to the fore after 2 minutes. From here, Pan-Pot builds up the tension with understated twists and turns, before dropping right into the bulk of the records potential around the 5 minute mark. I’ll leave the rest for you to revel in at your own leisure, but suffice to say this will definitely raise hell, should you be bestowed with the privilege of winding up an evening’s entertainment at venue with a more credible reputation than your average Wetherspoons.
