The Kai-Zen Blog
March 2011

Hello troops, February’s blog sadly took a back seat as a result of a fairly busy work schedule (sadly blog writing doesn’t pay enough to put food on the table), but i’m back for March with some seriously heavyweight electronica to serenade you with.
Here goes.......

Martin Dawson ‘Is This Goodbye’ [Moodmusic]

Martin’s new artist album ‘Sunday Smoking’ has recently been gifted to us everyday folk, and what an album it is! I’ve been keeping a firm eye fixed on Dawson’s output as a result of his impressive streak of released work that has been cropping up over the last year or so, most notably the Double 6 EP which is nothing less than brilliant. Running through this new (some might say premature) album, it’s clear he’s out to make a name for himself. Whilst only boasting a modest collection of released material, Martin’s clearly had a lot on his mind, and is obviously striking whilst the iron is hot. My choice from the LP would have to be the slow-burning slice of atmospheric Deep House ‘Is This Goodbye’, which is literally dripping with upbeat Balearic summer vibes. Warm strings ride over a chugging bassline, whilst Dawson’s fingers work the piano keys to bring the break to a crescendo before the drums come crashing back in. Outstanding music from a promising new talent.

Take it away, maestro.....

Hardfloor ‘Acperience’ (Robert Babicz Remix) [Unreleased]

I don’t really need to write anything here, do I?

Hardfloor’s seminal ‘Acperience’ has been given the rework treatment by none other than Tech-goldenboy Babicz and, well, it’s everything you’d expect. I could ramble on for an entire paragraph about how well he’s done, but be honest, you were already sold on the tune from the title.

Techno classic + Babicz update = Cash in bank. Nuff said.

Joris Voorn ‘Incident’ [Rejected]

I gave you the heads-up on this gem exactly a year ago now, and it’s finally received a full release on Voorn’s own imprint. The significance of its inclusion in my blog is not the period of time that has passed since I last discussed it, but the way in which Joris has decided to release it. The track has been released as ‘Incident (Miyagi)’ which should give you a good indication of what i’m talking about. He’s donating all the proceeds from this release to the tragic events that have befallen the residents of Japan over the last few weeks. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this noble effort is going to raise a decent sum of cash, seeing as though the track in question is just about the finest example of summer House music i’ve heard in years. If you’ve seen Voorn live at any point in the last 12 months, you’ll have heard it before and (if you’re anything like me) you’ll have danced your arse off. I wouldn’t be surprised if it takes the Beatport #1 slot, and rightly so, since this is far more worthy of the position than anything that the dullards at Toolroom HQ can inflict upon us.

Do the right thing and get yourself a copy. You get a bona fide modern-day anthem, they get your financial aid.... You can’t say fairer than that.
